Enphase vs Tesla Powerwall - which battery suits your property?

24 Sep 2026

The key difference

The biggest difference is how they're designed.

Enphase uses a modular approach. Its batteries come in smaller building blocks, around 5 kWh each, that you can stack together. Enphase batteries are designed to work with Enphase microinverters, where each solar panel has its own small inverter.

Tesla Powerwall 3 is one large unit with around 13.5 kWh of usable storage. It has a solar inverter built in, so it can manage both your panels and your battery from one box.

How they compare

Storage size

Powerwall 3 gives you a big chunk of storage in one hit, which suits households with high evening power use. Enphase lets you start smaller and add more modules as your needs change, which suits people who want to match storage more closely to their usage or budget.

Existing solar

If you already have an Enphase microinverter system, an Enphase battery is usually the natural fit. If you're installing new solar and a battery together, Powerwall 3's built-in inverter can keep things simple. Either way, we'll check what works with your current setup.

Shade and roof layout

Enphase microinverters handle shading and roofs facing multiple directions well, because each panel works independently. If part of your roof is shaded by trees or sheds for some of the day, that's worth factoring in.

Backup power

Both can provide backup during a blackout when installed with the right equipment. How much of your home can be backed up, and for how long, depends on the size of the system and what you want to keep running. For rural properties, it's important to plan around essentials like water pumps, fridges and freezers.

Monitoring

Both come with good apps that show your solar production, battery charge and household usage in real time.

Cost

Prices vary depending on system size and your property. Both are eligible for the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount, and may qualify for the NSW VPP incentive. We'll give you a clear, side-by-side quote if you're weighing up both.

So which one is right for you?

As a rough guide:

  • Enphase often suits properties with existing Enphase solar, partly shaded or complex roofs, and people who want to start small and expand over time.
  • Tesla Powerwall 3 often suits new solar and battery installs, households with high evening usage, and people who want a lot of storage in a single unit.

There's no one-size-fits-all answer. The right choice depends on your roof, your existing equipment, how you use power and what you want from backup.

Why the installer matters

A good battery installed poorly won't perform the way it should. We're an Enphase Gold Installer and a Tesla Certified Powerwall Installer, so we know both systems inside out and can give you an honest recommendation based on your property, not a sales target.
